how-to-help

Are you  energetic readers who are enthusiastic about sharing a great book?  Are you committed to seeing growing readers become life-long readers?  Are you a company or organization that would like to organize several small groups of readers?  If so, we have a classroom of children for you.

Our Read-Aloud Volunteers:

•    Spend 30 minutes in a classroom each week, sharing a love of reading through engaging and dynamic Read-Aloud sessions.
•    Encourage students to seek out different genres of literature.
•    Create an atmosphere surrounding books that is exciting and inspiring.
•    Participate in the Book Giveaway, distributing brand new books provided by Rolling Readers to each student in the class to help build their home libraries.

All Read-Aloud sessions take place during school hours, Monday-Friday. You work out the day/time with the teacher you are placed with, but need to have the same hour of availability each week.

A background check is required prior to reading, and can be completed entirely online. (Including the one-time payment of $20) Additionally, proof of a negative TB test is necessary.

We ask that Read-Aloud volunteers commit for 6 months to one year.  If you can't commit for this long, do you have a group of one or two friends or colleagues who can "team-up" and make the committment? The children quickly "bond" with their reader or "readers" so it is important that you be able to provide this consistency.

You have the freedom to choose your favorite books for Read-Aloud, and we have resources available to assist you in deciding what to read. Sometimes teachers will request books which will help extend the classroom curriculum, so that you are working together to further enrich the students academics

All Read-Aloud volunteers must attend an orientation prior to reading. The orientation helps you learn about becoming an engaging and dynamic reader.

If you would like to support Rolling Readers but are unable to make the commitment as a Read-Aloud volunteer, there are other avenues where we could certainly use your help. Opportunities  include:

Delivering books to schools in support of the Book Giveaway program
helping to sort and organize book donations  (Every first Friday of the month is book sort morning from 10 am to noon)
